Decorative and Stamped Concrete in San Marcos, TX
A decorative finish costs more than broom-finished gray, and it also asks more of you afterward. Swipe through the five finishes we pour, then see which one suits the spot you're building.
Decorative Concrete Finishes Compared for Texas Sun
Where the slab goes matters more than which finish looks best on a sample board. This is how we'd rank them for the spots people ask about most:
| Where it goes | Stamped | Integral color | Stained | Exposed aggregate | Broom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patio in full afternoon sun | ~ reseal often | ✓ | ~ reseal often | ✓ | ✓ |
| Covered porch or patio | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Pool deck | ~ slip additive | ✓ | ~ slip additive | ✓ | ✓ |
| Sloped driveway | ✗ slick when sealed | ✓ | ~ | ✓ | ✓ |

Stamped Concrete Patio Patterns and Color
Most stamped concrete goes on patios. Pressed concrete patio, patterned concrete, stamped cement patio: it's all the same process. Concrete is placed and floated, color hardener or integral color goes in, a release agent goes on, and the crew presses textured mats into the surface while the concrete is at just the right stiffness.
That window is the hard part in summer. Heat speeds up setting, so a big stamped slab poured late in a July morning can stiffen faster than the crew can stamp it. Large stamped jobs here should start at first light, or be split into sections with joints planned into the pattern.
Picking a pattern: large-format slate and flagstone patterns hide joints and minor cracks better than tight brick or tile grids. Choose colors in daylight, on a real sample, and expect the sealed result to be darker than the dry sample.
The slab underneath is built just like a plain concrete patio: same base, same steel, same slope away from the house. A stamped concrete driveway follows the concrete driveway rules, including the city approach spec where it meets the street (the approach itself stays standard concrete). A stamped concrete walkway can tie a patio to the front walk; the concrete sidewalk page covers layout and slope.
Exposed Aggregate Concrete for Drives and Pool Decks
Exposed aggregate is the decorative finish we'd steer most people toward on a sloped driveway or around a pool. The stones give real traction wet or dry, the surface hides tire marks and leaves, and there's no stamped texture for a sealer to turn slick.
The look depends on the stone in the mix, so ask to see a cured sample from the same supplier. An exposed aggregate driveway still gets control joints and the same base and steel as a plain one.
Concrete Staining Contractors: Acid Stain vs. Water-Based
| Acid (reactive) stain | Water-based stain | |
|---|---|---|
| How it colors | Reacts with the lime in the concrete | Sits on the surface |
| Look | Mottled, earthy, like aged leather | More even, more colors |
| Predictability | Two slabs stained the same day can differ | Predictable |
| Older concrete | Can react unevenly | Works well |
Either way, the surface has to be clean and open. Old sealer, paint, curing compound or oil spots block stain, and they show through as blotches.
Stamped Concrete Sealing in Full Sun
Sealer is what keeps stamped and stained color from fading and what makes it easy to hose off. It's also the part people forget. In San Marcos, where NOAA's normals put August average highs at 96.8°F, sealer on an unshaded patio wears faster than on a covered porch.
Let the concrete cure
Fresh concrete is sealed only after it has cured.
Clean the stamped surface
Sealer locks in whatever dirt is on the surface.
Seal in the cool of the morning
Not the afternoon heatHot slabs make solvent sealers bubble. Around pools, add a slip-resistant additive.
Reseal the stamped finish every few years
Sooner on traffic lanes and pool edgesWhen water stops beading and the color looks chalky, it's time.
Honest note: if you don't want to reseal, choose integral color with a broom or light-texture finish, or exposed aggregate. Both look good for years with little care.
Stamped Concrete Cost: Patterns, Colors and Borders
| Decorative finish | Published range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Stamped patio, all patterns | $8–$28 per sq ft | HomeAdvisor, June 2026 |
| Stamped, basic / mid / high-end | $8–$12 / $12–$18 / $18–$30 | Fixr, 2025 |
| Stamped patio, San Marcos | $9–$15 per sq ft | HomeBlue, 2022 |
| Concrete stain, basic to intricate | $2–$6 basic; $12–$25 intricate | HomeAdvisor, June 2026 |
The spread comes from the pattern, the number of colors, borders, and the shape of the slab. A single-color ashlar slate on a rectangle is at the low end; multi-color hand-detailed stone with borders and curves is at the top. Stamped concrete walkway cost runs higher per foot than a patio because narrow runs take as much setup for less area.

Stamped and Stained Concrete Questions
Is stamped concrete slippery around a pool?
It can be, especially with a glossy sealer. Ask for a texture with real relief and a slip-resistant additive in the sealer. Around pools, exposed aggregate or a light broom finish is the safer choice.
Does stamped concrete crack?
Yes, like any concrete. A good layout hides control joints in the pattern's grout lines, so the slab cracks where you expect it to. On active clay, base and steel matter as much under a stamped slab as under a plain one.
Can you stamp or stain my existing patio?
Existing concrete can be stained or resurfaced with a stamped overlay if it is sound. Overlays bond to what is underneath, so a slab that is cracked and moving will telegraph through anything put on top.
What is the best concrete stain?
There isn't one best stain, there's a best stain for the slab. Acid (reactive) stains give mottled, variegated color on new concrete; water-based stains give more even, predictable color and work on more surfaces. Either way, the sealer on top is what keeps it looking right.
